Gamelan and bagpipes Print E-mail

Gamelan Naga Mas will perform a concert of contemporary and traditional Indonesian music at the Eden Court Theatre in Inverness. Eden Court Theatre is the largest arts facility in the Highlands & Islands and has undergone a huge transformation before it was re-opened in 2007. The group will present a collection of outstanding original compositions written by the members of the ensemble, including a new collaboration for bagpipes and gamelan featuring guest piper Barnaby Brown.

In addition to the evening performance, Gamelan Naga Mas members Katherine Waumsley and Margaret Smith are offering Gamelan Music Workshop for adults with additional support needs and their carers on the afternoon of 30 May 2008. Together with Margaret Smith and J Simon van der Walt, Barnaby Brown will be leading a workshop on Indonesian Gamelan and Classical Piping on the morning of 31 May 2008. Biography 

Barnaby Brown is dedicated to revealing the ancient artistic traditions of Scotland's music. He champions an Early Music approach to Ceòl Mòr, the Great Music of the Highland bagpipe, and leads the revival of the Northern triplepipe, the medieval precursor of the bagpipe in Britain and Ireland. Editor of the Siubhal Series and author of triplepipe.net, he is active throughout Europe as a composer-performer, currently developing inter-cultural works with symphony orchestras, choirs, Japanese Taiko drums, Gamelan, Bhangra, Dhrupad, Pipes of Four Nations, and Sardinian artists. He teaches Composing & Arranging, Listening Skills, and Teaching Musics of the World at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.
